‘HJELM’
Marijana Jankovic, Denmark, 2026
In 1991, the Balkan region is in disarray. Encouraged by the whole situation, 6-year-old Maja travels with her parents to Denmark, leaving her two older brothers at home with the promise of a quick reunion. But the encounter with the promised land, Denmark, becomes a tough test for the small family and not least for Maja, who watches in wonder as her parents desperately try to adapt to a completely new world with its strange rules and traditions.
The Soulfuls is inviting the community to the premiere of the movie ‘HJELM’ at Empire Bio.
The film is directed by Marijana Jankovic and tells the story of her and her family's journey from the Balkan region to Denmark in the 1990s, and the challenges the family faces in their pursuit of a better life. Denmark is far from the fairytale land they had dreamed of, and everything comes at a price (the film will be in Danish).
Following the screening, there will be a panel with director Marijana Jankovic and journalist Nasra Jama, an alumni mentee and member of The Soulfuls Youth Advisory Board, moderated by documentary filmmaker Roja Pakari, who is a mentor at The Soulfuls.
